Readers ask questions before, during, and after reading. Readers ask questions to clarify confusing ideas. Today we will be learning about asking and answering questions while reading. This will help us understand what we read. Before we begin, let's think of some questions that we ask in our everyday lives. For example, I ask: What time is it? How are you doing? When is lunch? Who is our new student? Why are we going to recess early? Where is my pencil? Can you think of any on your own?
WHO questions are used to identify a person WHAT questions are used to learn about an object, action, or idea WHEN questions are used to learn about time of an event WHERE questions are used to learn about a location, person, or event WHY questions are used to learn about the reason for something happening HOW questions are used to learn the way something is done
Now that we know why we ask questions, let's listen and dance to a song!
Now it is your turn to ask questions while you read! Grab a book that is preferably your reading level. Read the book. Once you have read the book once, I want you to ask yourself who, what, where, when, why, and how questions that are about the story you read. Reread the book once more. Stop periodically to ask yourself those questions once more. Assignment: Fill out worksheet (shown below)
